What are dental veneers?

Veneers are one of the top requested cosmetic procedures that we provide to our patients here in Scottsdale, Cave Creek, and Carefree.  A veneer is typically made out of very thin porcelain or ceramic and is essentially a shell that is bonded over the front face and chewing edge of a tooth.  A set of veneers can come in a pair for just the two front teeth or span the entire smile.  To prepare the tooth for a veneer, the tooth enamel is shaved down up to a millimeter in depth to create a uniform space on which the veneer will be bonded.

Veneers can be custom shaded, typically to brighten a smile.  A single veneer or two could be shaded to match neighboring teeth as well.  A full set of veneers can be used to close gaps or spaces in between teeth, and even create a more perfectly aligned smile.

What are Lumineers®?

Lumineer® is the brand name of a type of dental veneer that does not require preparation or reduction of tooth enamel.  The product is manufactured by DenMat and has an excellent reputation.  Because the Lumineer does not require any tooth preparation, the veneer itself is extremely thin, almost comparable to a contact lens.  Lumineers can be an excellent option in many cases, depending on the original state of the teeth.

Do I need Veneers or Lumineers®?

That is really a question best left to your dentist after a consultation.  If you are located in Cave Creek, Carefree, or Scottsdale, Arizona, Dr. Samuel Swainhart at Carefree Smile would be happy to provide such a consultation.  Considerations include the current shade of your teeth and your desired shade, the existing condition of the teeth or dental work on the teeth receiving veneers, and any spaces or alignment issues.
